Laptop Charging Port & Not-Charging Repairs in Adelaide
Laptop plugged in but not charging, or the charger only works at a certain angle? Bring it into our Grange Road workshop with the charger. We'll test the charger, port, battery and charging circuit to find the real cause before we quote.
Common charging problems
- Only charges when the plug is held at an angle
- "Plugged in, not charging"
- No charging light at all
- USB-C laptop won't charge
- Charges very slowly or stops at the same percentage
- Dies as soon as it's unplugged
What could be causing it
Charger or cable - worn, damaged or the wrong wattage (common with USB-C chargers).
Charging port - a worn or loose DC jack or USB-C port. On some laptops the port is a separate part; on others it's soldered to the motherboard. We do this board-level soldering in-house.
Battery - an old or failed battery can stop the laptop charging properly (see laptop battery replacement).
Charging circuit - parts on the board that manage charging can fail (see laptop board repairs).
Settings - some laptops have a battery-care setting that stops charging at a set level.
How we find the fault
We test with a known-good charger, inspect the port, check the battery and test the charging circuit. That way you're not paying for a part you don't need.
Repair options
Depending on what we find: a replacement charger, a port repair or replacement, a new battery, board-level repair, or our honest advice if the repair isn't worth it on your laptop.
DC jack or USB-C?
Older and many gaming laptops use a round barrel plug (a DC jack). Newer laptops often charge through USB-C. Either way, whether the port is a separate part or soldered to the board makes a big difference to the work involved, so we check your model before quoting.
Price and timing
It depends on your model and whether the port is a separate part or soldered to the board. We quote before any work starts, and part availability for your model affects timing. Warranty depends on the part used and is confirmed on your quote.
What to bring
